Complimenting for thinness

Here are a few things that can happen when we compliment someone for their thinness.

The recipient may start to believe that they only look good or acceptable like this, and they begin to fear any amount of weight gain.

The recipient may feel that their restrictive eating or over exercising habits are now justified, and they decide not to reach out for help.

The recipient may start to compare their body to other people’s bodies, which fuels unhealthy competition.

The recipient may start to equate their worth to the size and shape of their body.

You may end up feeling jealous and “less than” as you now start to compare your body to theirs.

We mean well, but applauding a person for losing weight or looking thin can easily harm their well-being and our own. Let’s make an effort to offer compliments based on anything but appearance!
